According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers have become one of the most substantial drivers of energy demand growth, with overall consumption projected to rise from 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022 to over 1000 TWh by 2026. What challenges must we address to meet this escalating energy consumption from AI applications? And will this demand act as a barrier or an accelerator for a sustainable energy transition?
In this talk, Prof. Renato Lima-de-Oliveira, from the Asia School of Business in Kuala Lumpur and a research affiliate at MIT, will discuss technical and policy measures being developed to tackle the energy demands generated by applications like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Drawing from the latest research insights in the field and direct engagement with industry stakeholders, Prof. Lima-de-Oliveira—who teaches energy markets and policy at ASB—will also examine the impact of data center expansion in Malaysia, where electricity demand is expected to increase by 30% over the next few years solely to support new data centers.
