Event Details

China's DeepSeek has taken the world by storm with implications in AI technology, business, and policy. It is early days since this momentous AI innovation hit us a couple of weeks ago, but on Feb 18, join a panel of experts at AmCham for an insightful DeepSeek discussion.

AmCham and its Innovation & Technology Committee will take a "Dive into DeepSeek" and explore how DeepSeek is jolting conventional thinking on AI development, stirring the debate on US tech export policy towards China, and causing businesses to think about how this new AI development affects their industries and planning. We will discuss the implications of DeepSeek on the future US-China relations and the different scenarios of DeepSeek's future, and how businesses could respond.

George Chen is a practitioner/scholar with over two decades of expertise across media, technology, and public policy. Currently, George is Managing Director (Head of Hong Kong and Taiwan Offices) and Co-Chair of Digital Practice for The Asia Group, advising many Fortune 500 clients on geopolitics, national security, and various regulatory issues. Previously, George was Meta/Facebook’s first and most senior policy leader for Greater China, Mongolia and Central Asia for more than seven years. Earlier in his career, George was in various editorial and management positions for media organizations including the South China Morning Post and Reuters for more than a decade. Concurrently, George is also a Senior Fellow of Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. George teaches “Digital Society and Governance” for Master students at the HKU and Schwarzman.

George received his Master’s degree of international and public affairs (with distinction) in 2012 from the HKU where he remains a doctoral candidate for his research on misinformation. George has been named a Salzburg Global Fellow (2024), Visiting Scholar at National Chengchi University in Taipei (2023), an alumnus of U.S. State Department International Visitor Leadership Program (2015), Yale World Fellow at Yale University (2014) and an Asia 21 Young Leadership Fellow of the Asia Society (2007). In 2022 George was awarded the “Medal of Friendship” by the President of Mongolia, one of the country’s highest and most rare honours for foreigners. George has been on the Board of American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong since 2019. George is an author of three books and he speaks Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Shanghai dialect and English.

Terence Chow is a seasoned technology leader and innovator with over two decades of experience in information technology and research & development with multinational technology firms such as AWS and IBM. As a passionate advocate for technological advancement, he specializes in cloud computing, Generative AI, big data analytics, and agile methodologies, in addition to bringing extensive expertise in software development, account management, and business development.

Throughout his career, Terence has demonstrated a unique ability to bridge cutting-edge technology with practical business applications, helping organizations navigate their digital transformation journeys. His commitment to continuous learning and innovation has established him as a trusted advisor in technology adoption and implementation strategies.

Bryan Ha leads the public policy work of AWS in Hong Kong, with overall responsibility for policy, regulatory and government relations matters in Hong Kong. Before joining AWS in late 2022, Bryan was a directorate officer in the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. During his 18-years government career, Bryan formulated and implemented policies relating to external affairs, innovation and technology, public finance, elderly care, vocational education, and district administration, including two overseas postings in Berlin and Washington D.C.

Bryan studied and worked in the U.K. and Germany from 1995 to 2004. He holds a Master of Engineering in Computing (first class) from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, and worked as a software designer/engineer at Deutsche Börse and Nortel Networks. Since early 2024, Bryan serves as a Co-Chair of AmCham’s I&T Committee. He is also a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and a Full Member of the Hong Kong Computer Society.
