1904 Bank of America Tower, 12 Harcourt Road
Central, Hong Kong SAR (China)
The American Chamber of Commerce's Environment & Sustainability Committee, Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, Young Professionals Committee, The British Chamber of Commerce and Business Environment Council jointly bring you a timely and cogent analysis of the urgent issues facing society and ecological stability, from the author of one of the earliest and most prescient books on the subject.
The dual adoption of the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) together with the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 represents a global turning point. Never before has there been a universal, and universally accepted, development plan for people and planet. Yet if current trends continue, the world will only achieve 10 of the 17 SDGs. Achieving the social goals would lead to large resource footprints and pollution, making achievement of the environmental goals close to impossible and pushing us quickly past planetary boundaries.
Jorgen Randers, Professor Emeritus of Climate Strategy at the BI Norwegian Business School and co-author of the acclaimed 1972 book The Limits to Growth, will discuss the various ways we can achieve the SDGs: business-as-usual, intensified conventional policies, or global transformation. He will also introduce the critical context of planetary boundaries, and suggest how we can achieve sustainable development within a resilient and stable Earth system.
