Mr. YEUNG Tak-keung was appointed the first Commissioner for Sports of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government on 1 February 2016. He is Responsible for the formulation and implementation of government initiatives and programmes to promote “Sports for All”, support elite sports development and enhance Hong Kong’s Position as a sports events capital. He also coordinates the planning and provision of sports and recreation facilities, including the 28-hectares Kai Tak Sports Park and the 41 projects under the Five-Year Plan for Sports and Recreation Facilities.
Prior to his appointment to the current post, Mr. YEUNG has served in different bureaux and departments. He was the Equestrian Events Coordinator in the Home Affairs Bureau, assisting in the organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian events in 2008. When he served as District Officer in Yuen Long from end 2008 to 2012, he actively promoted sports in the local community particularly among the youth and developed new sports facilities in the district, resulting in remarkable achievements of Yuen Long District in the biennial Hong Kong Games in 2009 and 2011. He was responsible for the deployment of resources for public works and the government procurement policy during his tenure as Deputy Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury from 2013 to 2015.
Mr. YEUNG is a sports enthusiast and has strong passion for sports. He has been taking part in a wide range of team and individual sports since his schooldays. He was a member of the Hong Kong handball team and was awarded the Sportsman of the Year by the University of Hong Kong. He now plays squash, football and handball in local leagues and tournaments and enjoys jogging and golfing at leisure times.
