Discussion by U.S. tax experts on what tax law changes are being proposed by the Biden administration. Focus will be on gift tax / estate tax / income tax changes which, if enacted, can have significant effect on high net worth individuals, and as to what are some actions they should take in anticipation of the tax law changes.

Peter is both a certified public accountant and an attorney with more than 20 years of experience in tax advisory and planning. He has advised China, Hong Kong and US and other multinational corporations and high net worth individuals on their inbound and outbound transactions, China and international tax issues, investment structuring, regulatory, and business issues; mergers , acquisitions; and the reorganizations of multinationals in China and the Asia Pacific region; structuring of trusts, foundations, estate planning and asset preservation for individuals. He has represented companies and individuals to resolve tax disputes with tax authorities in China and the US.

Recently, Peter has been engaged by the Ministry of Finance of a Southeast Asian nation to draft the country’s tax regulations and to provide consulting on international tax matters.

Previously, Peter was with a major economic consulting firm and also was a tax partner at Deloitte US, where he was responsible for the China Desk in New York, and served as China leader at the firm’s International Centre of Excellence.

Jobey is a personal tax specialist practicing both U.S. and Hong Kong individual income taxes. She has over 10 years of experience working with multinational companies and employees on tax reporting and advisory projects.

Jobey has extensive experience in providing expatriate tax services to multinational companies as well as high net worth individuals. She also supports a large number of expatriate mobility programs from both a compliance and advisory standpoint including banks, private equity funds and multinational companies.

Jobey is a Hong Kong Certified Public Accountant, member of Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accounts and also an enrolled agent. She has a Bachelor of Business and Administrative (Hons) degree in Accountancy and Law from the City University of Hong Kong.

Ruby is a certified public accountant. Ruby has assisted multinational corporations, real estate developers, private equity funds, C-suite executives, and ultra-high-net-worth individuals with respect to their US inbound and outbound investment structure, transaction model, equity compensation, establishment of trust with US elements, strategies for charitable giving, and succession planning.

Ruby has also assisted clients communicating with U.S. federal and state and Hong Kong tax authorities in tax dispute or tax appeal engagements.

Previously, Ruby worked with big four accounting firms in Hong Kong and Taipei to provide U.S. tax services. Ruby also worked with a leading China-based law firm in Hong Kong.

Ruby is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and is fluent in English and Taiwanese.

Thomas is a member of the Asia Pacific International Core of Excellence (AP ICE), a group of senior tax professionals that provides international tax services to Asia Pacific-based companies investing abroad, as well as multinational companies investing in the region.

Thomas has over 10 years of experience advising private equity funds and multinational corporations on US federal income tax aspects of mergers and acquisition (M&A) and cross border investments, as well as IPO structuring, corporate restructuring, US tax due diligence, and FATCA compliances.
Before joining Deloitte APICE in Hong Kong, he worked in Los Angeles and Taipei specializing in US M&A tax, US international tax and Chinese inbound investment in the US. He was also a lawyer of a Chinese law firm where he focused his practice on venture capital and private equity fund formation.
