This will be a fireside chat with people across sectors that work with Hong Kong's young generation and discuss the attributes of local young people they see and their prospects. What are the opportunities and challenges? What can government and businesses do to bridge the gap? What role does education play?

Born and raised in Hong Kong, John emigrated to the United States when he was a Form II student at La Salle College. He continued his education at Stuyvesant High School in New York City, and studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He went on to complete master degrees in Bilingual Education at Boston State College and in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He worked in the Boston Public Schools as a teacher and in curriculum development.

John returned to work as an Administrative Officer in the Hong Kong Government in 1982. He took up a number of posts relating to commerce and finance. After reunification, he was appointed as Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Secretary for Planning and Lands, Secretary for Commerce, Innovation and Technology, Director of the Chief Executive’s Office and in 2007, Financial Secretary where he served until 2017.

John is currently engaged in a number of diverse activities. He is the Founder of Esperanza, a nonprofit organisation, the Vice Chairman of Ion Pacific, a financial institution that specialises in technology investments, the Senior Advisor of Bowtie, a virtual insurance company, the host of a weekly music program on Commercial Radio and the fencing coach of La Salle College.

John is married with two grown children and three grand-children.

As the Managing Director for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, she provides leadership and has overall general management responsibility for these three regions. Twinky provides strategic direction and operational guidance to ensure that Otis grows the business in all lines of business. With her team, Twinky will drive our service transformation efforts and continue to focus on becoming/sustaining the best customer-centric organization. Twinky will ensure that Otis maintains a fatality-free culture and create high employee engagement rooted in our values of ethics, controls and compliance.

Twinky started at Otis in 2007 as an intern, and following graduation from Purdue with her MBA in 2008, she joined Otis in the regional general management leadership program (GMLP). She was the Director/Regional General Manager for Northern California before joining Hong Kong as the Managing Director. Before joining Otis, Twinky was an account manager at Tyee Products North America and a senior case manager at Liberty Mutual Insurance.

Twinky holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine and a master’s degree in operations & strategy from Purdue University.

George Chen’s career spans international media, academia, and now public policy at Meta (formally Facebook) whose mission is to bring the world closer together.

As the Managing Director, Public Policy, for Greater China, Mongolia, and Central Asia, George serves as Meta’s “ambassador” to engage with the people and governments across the vast and diverse regions on a wide range of policy issues from online safety to data privacy, and free expression to digital economy. George joined Facebook in January 2016 as the company’s first-ever policy representative based in Hong Kong, home for Meta in the Greater China region.

Prior to Facebook, George has worked in the media sector for about 15 years including for the South China Morning Post, Reuters, and Dow Jones. George has been a five-times judge (2014-2018) for journalism awards of the Society of Publishers in Asia. In 2014 George was named by Yale University a Yale World Fellow. He was also a 2015 fellow of the US State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). George earned his Master’s degree (distinction) for international and public affairs at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), with a concentration on the triangular US-China-Taiwan relations. He’s a doctoral candidate for public administration at the HKU.

George has authored and edited four books in English and Chinese languages: “Defending Election Integrity in Taiwan” (2020), “The Next Big Thing – How China Challenges Silicon Valley And Changes Global Landscape” (2015), “This is Hong Kong I Know” (2014), and “Foreign Banks in China” (2011).

George sits on the Board of Governors of The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. George is also co-director of the Tech for Good Initiative at the HKU where he helps to launch the Facebook-HKU Scholarship in Public Policy and Sustainability Leadership.

Charleston worked in Canada, Silicon Valley, and Greater China for 25 years, holding executive positions in System Engineering, Product Management, and Sales & Marketing at VMware, Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks. He has strong interest in emerging technology and key market transition trends, such as Internet/Web, Cloud Computing, Mobility, IOT, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and new business models. Currently, he is a Member of the Board of Director, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company. From 2011 to 2017, he was appointed by the Hong Kong SAR Government as Member of Digital 21 Strategy Advisory Committee. Charleston studied Management of Technology at the University of Waterloo in Canada where he received his PhD in Management Sciences in 1997. He also completed a Master degree in Investment Management at the HKUST in 2005.

Jason Yip is the CEO at MWYO, an independent "think & do" tank on youth policy in Hong Kong. The organization has taken a pioneer role to conduct research with policy recommendation and test it through solid community programs. Their topics range from education to social participation, and from youth well-being to their employability.

Before returning to Hong Kong in 2019, Jason was the Regional Head of Unit at the government affairs & donor relations division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), covering the Greater China, Malaysia and Singapore. During his development in the organization, Jason worked in the headquarters in Geneva to develop dialogue and mobilize resources with the member states to the Geneva Convention. In addition, he also stationed in Palestine, Afghanistan and Myanmar under the capacity of the ICRC Delegate. He was responsible for developing and implementing ICRC’s humanitarian initiatives in the battlefield. He had also experience in emergence relief, e.g. Sichuan’s earthquake in 2008 and migrant crisis in Andaman Sea in 2015. Jason has extensive experience in security analysis and building dialogues with non-state military groups.

Jason earned his master’s degree in International Relations from Waseda University in Japan and BBA from the University of Hong Kong. He was also selected as an AsiaGlobal Fellow by the AsiaGlobal Institute in 2020. He started his career as an analyst in Goldman Sachs. In 2018, Jason was awarded a Medal of Honour by the HKSAR Government and was selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons by Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (JCIHK).
