Are we headed towards war on the Korean peninsula? With threats and insults from U.S. President Donald Trump, no sign that international sanctions or pressure are deterring Kim Jong Un from further missile and nuclear tests, and little evidence China is willing or able to use its leverage in a way that will force a change in North Korea behavior, the risks of conflict are growing.

Two experts on North Korea will share their perspectives in a conversation with AmCham President Tara Joseph.

Mike Chinoy is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the U.S.-China Institute at the University of Southern California and the creator of the Assignment China documentary film series on the history of American correspondents in China. He is also an independent consultant on media strategy and training for business executives, NGOs, and others.

Previously, he was a Senior Fellow at the Los Angeles-based Pacific Council on International Policy, focusing on security issues in North Korea, China, and Northeast Asia. He is the author of three books: China Live: People Power and the Television Revolution, Meltdown: The Inside Story of the North Korean Nuclear Crisis, and The Last POW.

Before joining the Pacific Council and USC in 2006, Chinoy spent 24 years as a foreign correspondent for CNN. He was the network’s first Bureau Chief in Beijing, and served as Bureau Chief in Hong Kong and as Senior Asia Correspondent.

He has reported on the most important events in Asia since the mid-1970s, including the death of Mao Zedong, the rise of China, the Hong Kong handover, the Soviet and US wars in Afghanistan, the Southeast Asian tsunami, and elections and political crises in Taiwan. He has interviewed many prominent international figures, including Jiang Zemin, Kim Il Sung, Tung Chee-hwa, Corazon Aquino, Benazir Bhutto, Colin Powell, Kim Dae-jung, Ma Ying-jeou, and many others.

He is a leading specialist on North Korea. He has visited Pyongyang 17 times, and, in addition to writing two books on the country, he is a regular commentator on North Korean issues for leading media outlets including, among others, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, and the Washington Post.

Mr. Chinoy has received numerous awards for his journalism, including the Emmy, Peabody, and Dupont awards. He holds a BA from Yale University and an MS from Columbia University. He is based in Hong Kong.

Ben Yeung is the Head of Strategy and Business Intelligence, Asia-Pacific and a Director in the Global Investigations + Strategic Intelligence Practice of BRG. He is based in Hong Kong.

Mr. Yeung has extensive experience managing business intelligence projects on behalf of major international investment banks and global law firms, as well as public and private corporations. These confidential assignments have included information-gathering exercises in support of investment and business decision-making, in-depth reputational due diligence, corporate and fraud investigations, asset searching, corruption and bribery issues, and other fact-finding studies. He has also worked on a large number of projects looking into suspected business irregularities. Before joining BRG, he was a managing director at a global consulting firm, specializing in business intelligence, risk management and investigations.

Whilst much of Mr. Yeung’s work has been Greater China focused, he also has experience in managing projects in jurisdictions including the US, the UK, Australia, India, Korea, Mongolia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Myanmar, where he has worked on numerous occasions.

Mr. Yeung has a Ph.D. in politics, an M.A. in international relations, and a B.A. in war studies and history. His doctoral thesis examined the concept of economic security and policymaking in China.

Mr. Yeung is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Tara Joseph has been president of AmCham Hong Kong since February 2017. She is charged with overall responsibility for leadership and operations of one of the most influential NGO business organizations in the Asia Pacific, with a mission to foster commerce among the United States, Hong Kong and mainland China.

Tara has more than 15 years experience working in Asia, covering top economic and political stories as a foreign correspondent for Reuters. In her 22 years as journalist, she has reported on hundreds of the world’s most important and high profile news stories including Russia’s financial crisis, Myanmar’s emergence from virtual isolation, China's rise on the world stage and the Beijing Olympics to name a few. As a TV reporter and presenter she has interviewed Fortune 500 CEO’s and government officials across the globe.
Earlier in her career, Tara was the editor and main presenter of Reuters Financial Television based in London, and covered emerging markets and G7 economic issues.

Tara is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism, and Smith College in the United States. She has twice served as President of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong, one of the world’s largest press clubs.
