Event Details

On June 14, Onward Hong Kong series comes to an end. With a closing keynote speech by Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau, and a closing panel featuring Allen Zeman, Jasper Tsang, James Fok, Harshika Patel and Moderator Stacey Chow. They will present their views of the opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong as it enters the next 25 years as a special administrative region of China.


The whole series had looked at this theme from different angles, from Hong Kong as a sustainable and smart city, as an international financial center, to Hong Kong as a global hub for arts, culture and sports, etc. We will attempt to summarize the learnings from this series and help AmCham members look ahead at the road they face and take advantage of the special characteristics of Hong Kong being an international business city sitting in China.

Jasper Tsang (Former President of the Legislative Council)
Jasper Tsang
Mr Jasper Tsang Yok-sing was chairman of the political party Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong from 1992 to 2003. Before Hong Kong’s return to China in 1997, Mr Tsang was actively involved in the preparatory work for the setting up of the Special Administrative Region. He served on the Preparatory Committee formed by the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress in 1996 and was a member of the Provisional Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR from 1997 to 1998. Mr Tsang was a member of the Legislative Council from 1998 to 2016, representing the Kowloon West constituency from 1998 to 2008 and the Hong Kong Island constituency from 2008 and 2016. Mr Tsang was the President of the Legislative Council from 2008 to 2016.
Allan Zeman (Chairman at Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Ltd)
Allan Zeman
Dr. Allan Zeman, GBM, GBS, JP, is the founder and Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Group, a major property owner and developer in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong Area. Dr. Zeman serves as the Non-Executive Director of Pacific Century Premium Developments Limited and is an independent non-executive director of Sino Land Company Limited, Tsim Sha Tsui Properties Limited, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), Global Brands Group Holding Limited and Fosun Tourism Group, all of which are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Dr. Zeman is also the Non-Executive Chairman of Wynn Macau Limited, a director of the "Star" Ferry Company, Limited, a board member of the Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund launched by Alibaba Group and abBoard Member of the Airport Authority of Hong Kong. Having lived in Hong Kong for over 45 years, Dr. Zeman has been very involved in government services. Dr. Zeman is a Vice Patron of Hong Kong Community Chest and was the Chairman of Hong Kong Ocean Park from July 2003 to June 2014 and is now an honorary advisor. Dr. Zeman is also a member of the General Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and is the representative of Hong Kong China to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council ("ABAC HK Members"). Dr. Zeman is a member of the board of Governors of The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. A board of Governor of Our Hong Kong Foundation, an appointed member of the HKSAR Chief Executive's Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development and a member of the Human Resources Planning Commission (HRPC) chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration. In 2001, Dr. Zeman was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong. He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2004 and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2011. In 2008, Dr. Zeman was awarded Business Person of the Year by the Hong Kong Business Award. In 2012, he was awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees of Business Administration from City University of Hong Kong and University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong.
Harshika Patel (CEO, Hong Kong of JP Morgan)
Harshika Patel
Harshika Patel is a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan based in Hong Kong. She is responsible for running Strategy for J.P. Morgan in Asia Pacific partnering with the Corporate and Investment bank, Asset and Wealth Management and Commercial Banking businesses to drive and implement the firm’s strategy across our 16 markets. She also serves as the CEO for Hong Kong which is home to the firm’s Asia Pacific headquarters. Harshika sits on the Board of J.P. Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific) Limited and on the EXCO of ASIFMA where she also serves as Treasurer. Harshika joined J.P. Morgan in November 2013 as a Managing Director based in Singapore to run the Asia Commodities Sales and Structuring business and the Electronic Sales business, delivering electronic trading services across FX, Rates, Credit and Commodities to clients. Prior to joining the firm, Harshika was at Barclays Capital for 10 years where she held a variety of roles based in London including Deputy Treasurer for Barclays Capital, and Global Chief Operating Officer for the Commodities business. Between 1994 and 2003, she was a Senior Manager in the Financial Services Practice at Deloitte London providing assurance and advisory services to global financial institutions. Harshika is based in Hong Kong with her husband and two children.
James Fok (‎Financial Markets Professional and Author)
James Fok
James Fok is a veteran financial and strategic advisor to corporations and governments. He served as a senior executive at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) from 2012 until 2021, during a period of rapid internationalisation in China's capital markets. While there, he played a major role in a number of landmark financial markets initiatives, including the launch of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect programme (2014), Bond Connect (2017) and the Hong Kong market's Listing Reforms (2018). Prior to HKEX, Fok worked as an investment banker in both Europe and Asia, specialising in the financial services sector. Fok has written and spoken extensively about market structure issues and the intersection between geopolitics and international finance. He serves or has served on a number of financial industry bodies, including Ireland for Finance's Industry Advisory Committee (2021-), the Executive Board of the International Securities Services Association (2018-21), and the Financial Services Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council (2014-21). He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Hex Trust (2021-). Fok holds a BA (Hons) from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. He lives in Hong Kong with his wife and two sons.
Stacey Chow (Moderator) (Partner, Business & Society Asia-Pacific Lead, Hong Kong at Brunswick Group)
Stacey Chow (Moderator)
Stacey advises organizations on building social-purpose narratives, initiatives, and strategies around environmental, social and governance issues. Advising clients on stakeholder engagement, global partnerships, and leadership positioning for C-suite executives, she helps clients to future-proof their businesses in order to build long-term resilience and global competitiveness. Stacey has tri-sector experience in the government, international organization and corporate arenas, spanning an 18-year career across the World Economic Forum, the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, and has a background in international development, trade and investment promotion and infrastructure development. Using her synergistic view on the role of business in society, she has driven the strategic direction of major Asian conglomerates and Global Multinational Corporations, enabling them to mitigate risks, capture future value and lead positive change. On pro-bono basis, Stacey is a member of the Energy, Environment, Social, and Governance (E-ESG) Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong, a member of the Environment and Sustainability Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and a committee member of the 30% Club Hong Kong. Previously, she was formerly a Deputy Director for Asia at the United Nations Association in Washington, D.C. on a pro bono basis. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from UCLA, a Master’s Degree in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a professional certificate degree from the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership. She was previously selected as a 2012–2015 Global Leadership Fellow at the World Economic Forum. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Algernon Yau (Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development)
Algernon Yau
Mr Yau assumed the post of the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development on July 1, 2022. His portfolio covers policy areas from trade, commerce to telecommunications and broadcasting, and from promotion of intellectual property and consumer protection to boosting inward investment. Before joining the Government, Mr Yau held key managerial positions in the aviation and logistics sector. He was Chief Executive Officer of Greater Bay Airlines, and prior to this, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay Dragon, Executive Director of Cathay Pacific Board, and Director Service Delivery of Cathay Pacific. Mr Yau managed different aspects of business operations throughout his career in the private sector, and also served on various advisory bodies of the Government. Mr Yau holds a Bachelor of Business degree in Transport and Logistics from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong.
