Presumptive Democratic nominee for President Joe Biden is preparing his foreign policy platform in the ramp up to the Democratic National Convention and the final months of the 2020 election. What are the major points of tension between the Republican and Democratic candidates? Should Biden be elected, what would the US policy toward Asia look like under his administration? Will US trade and economic policies towards Hong Kong and China see significant changes? How about trade policy for Greater Asia? How will US-China relations change after four years of deepening tensions?

US Senator from Minnesota. Mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Chief Prosecutor and Solicitor General. Senator Norm Coleman was a public servant for three decades before joining us as of counsel in 2011 where he is in our Government Relations and Policy Advocacy practice group. It also applies to how he works with former colleagues on both sides of the political aisle.

Whether it is on Capitol Hill, in corporate boardrooms, or in foreign consulates, Senator Coleman utilizes his relationships and experiences at the highest levels of the political process to help our clients. He has the unique ability to quickly dissect issues and frame solutions to challenges, all with his characteristic warm manner. Senator Coleman is a sought-after champion for clients looking to navigate the complexities of the Washington political and regulatory process.

Senator Coleman's breadth of experience makes him a go-to person throughout the firm. From his service on the prestigious Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and as Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, to his work as an urban mayor, to bringing the NHL back to Minnesota, Senator Coleman has a wide variety of skillsets he regularly puts to use for our clients.

The concept of service is close to Senator Coleman's heart; he is active in a variety of political organizations and nonprofits. An article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune profiling his "working the halls of power" in Washington, D.C. notes that he wields more clout today than he did when he was in office.

Kelly Ann Shaw, former Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, brings to bear a deep knowledge of U.S. international trade, investment, and economic law and policy drawn from her extensive public service at the White House, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), and the Ways and Means Committee in the U.S. Congress.

In her White House role, serving on both the National Security Council and National Economic Council, Kelly Ann led the Office of International Economic Affairs and played an instrumental role in a wide range of legislation, negotiations, and agreements, including the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the China Phase One agreement. As a senior adviser to the president on matters of international economic policy, including trade, investment, development, global economics, energy, and the environment, she was directly involved in almost every major economic decision made at the Trump White House.

Kelly Ann also as served as lead U.S. negotiator at the G7, G20, and APEC and led the U.S.-UK Economic Working Group. As Republican Trade Counsel for the Committee on Ways and Means, Kelly Ann played an important role in formulating U.S. international trade and investment law, policy, and strategy. In her role as Assistant General Counsel for USTR based in Geneva, Switzerland, and Washington, D.C., she represented the United States in more than 40 World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes and in negotiations. She also served as a lead lawyer, negotiator, and adviser in other important international negotiations, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Prior to her distinguished government service, Kelly Ann was in private practice in Washington, D.C.

Ivan Zapien is well known in every facet of the government relations community in Washington, D.C. From politics and Capitol Hill to corporate America, Ivan is well respected on both sides of the aisle.

While serving as a chief of staff in both the U.S. House and Senate, Ivan built deep networks across both House and Senate Democrats. He also drove the government relations strategy and outreach for Walmart, the No. 1 company on the Fortune 500 list. Thus, Ivan brings a unique and complex perspective to client engagements.

Ivan is a bilingual lawyer, executive, advocate, and leader with international and domestic experience in government affairs management and campaigns. He advises clients on diverse strategies, capitalizing on the opportunities of the current environment, while minimizing risk.

Prior to joining the firm, Ivan managed Walmart's Mexico and Central America foundation, communications, government relations, and sustainability efforts. Before moving to Mexico City, he served as the vice president for federal government relations and head of Walmart's Washington office. These experiences resulted in international management experience in government, public relations, and corporate communications. He has vast experience as a leader in Democratic politics, having served as national outreach director of the House Democratic Caucus and as executive director of the Hispanic Leadership Council of the Democratic National Committee.

Ivan has been recognized as one of the "Most Influential Hispanics" by Hispanic Business and as one of the top lobbyists by Latino Magazine. He received the 2015 Alumni Achievement Award for Advocacy Efforts from the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management. In 2019, he was awarded the Hispanic Lobbyist Association's President's Award and was recognized by The Hill as a Top Lobbyist for 2019.

Tara Joseph has been president of AmCham Hong Kong since February 2017. She is charged with overall responsibility for leadership and operations of one of the most influential NGO business organizations in the Asia Pacific, with a mission to foster commerce among the United States, Hong Kong and mainland China.

Tara has more than 15 years experience working in Asia, covering top economic and political stories as a foreign correspondent for Reuters. In her 22 years as journalist, she has reported on hundreds of the world’s most important and high profile news stories including Russia’s financial crisis, Myanmar’s emergence from virtual isolation, China's rise on the world stage and the Beijing Olympics to name a few. As a TV reporter and presenter she has interviewed Fortune 500 CEO’s and government officials across the globe.

Earlier in her career, Tara was the editor and main presenter of Reuters Financial Television based in London, and covered emerging markets and G7 economic issues.

Tara is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism, and Smith College in the United States. She has twice served as President of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong, one of the world’s largest press clubs.
