This year, the WOI is delighted to celebrate Hong Kong Art Month alongside Christie's Auction House. What is the role of art in your investment portfolio? Have you considered collecting, but not sure where to begin? How can you spot emerging talent? Where are the best opportunities for contemporary art collecting in Hong Kong? Please join us for an engaging session on the business of Cultivating an Investor's Eye for Contemporary Art. We will hear from powerhouse, Christie's, alongside other important voices from the Hong Kong contemporary art scene.

Sara Mao is the Director for Christie’s Education in Asia Pacific, overseeing the development of programmes and partnerships across Hong Kong, China, and South East Asia. Sara joined Christie’s in 2008 and was appointed Specialist Head of Sale for Chinese Modern Paintings in 2015, and then as Director for Christie’s Education in 2018.

Sara has curated over ten seasons of auctions for some of the most iconic paintings in the field of Chinese paintings, nurturing client relationships with seasoned collectors and new buyers, and leading the growth of the category through securing consignments globally for auction and private sales. She was responsible for spearheading record-breaking sales of Fu Baoshi’s The Song of the Pipa Player for HKD204.8 million, and Zhang Daqian’s Ancient Temples Amidst Clouds for HKD102.4 million, in 2017.

Bringing her specialist experience to education, she currently leads programmes in Asian Art, Art Business and Luxury Connoisseurship, with a focus on Women Artists and Art & Tech. She was the curator for Christie’s Art + Tech Summit “Mixed Realities” in 2019, and co-convenor for Christie’s Education’s first online academic conference “The Chinese Art Market”, in 2020.

Sara is also an auctioneer for Christie’s, supporting numerous charity auctions including Save the Children, Ronald McDonald House, Make a Wish Foundation, The National Kidney Foundation (SNG), and others.

After receiving her B.A. in Philosophy & English Literature at the University of York (UK), Sara acquired her Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School (UK) and a Master of Letters in History of Art and Connoisseurship, with a concentration in Chinese art, from Christie’s Education and the University of Glasgow.

Originally from California, Katie de Tilly arrived in Hong Kong in 1994 when contemporary art from Asia was yet to come into international focus. She founded 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in 2001 representing artists from Asia-Pacific. The Gallery has hosted ‘HKForeword’ since 2012, giving local art graduates their first gallery exhibition, and Katie co-organized Chai Wan Mei, a yearly art and design festival from 2013-2015.

Katie has been on the board of the Tate Modern Asia Pacific Acquisitions Committee, and is on the Program Advisory Committee of RMIT University School of Art /Hong Kong Art School. She was a founding member and Co-President of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association, and a Founding Patron of the WKCD M+ Museum of Visual Culture. Along with these many ‘firsts’ Katie heads the HK Artists Residency Abroad Funding Scheme of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association to help local artists enrich their art exposure and education. Katie was awarded “Master of The Arts“ in 2019 by the Women of Influence committee of the American Chamber.

Born in the 90s, Ernest Chang is a Chinese-American multidisciplinary artist with deuteranopia (red-green color-blindness) with his studio in Hong Kong. Chang was born in Tampa, Florida and moved to Hong Kong when he was young where he was raised in a bi-cultural family. He studied photography briefly at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida and Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong until he dropped out before receiving his degree to pursue his art full-time. Which, in 2014, inspired him to open The Stallery, a hybrid gallery and studio for creating art and exhibiting local artists on Wanchai’s historic Stone Nullah Lane where Chinese and Western cultures constantly fuse and collide.

Chang sees the vibrantly global metropolis that is Hong Kong from a unique perspective, one which imbues his creative practice with a heavy use of cutting-edge visual media, digital platforms, futuristic compositional elements, as well as heightened color contrasts and contours. His works investigate the under-examined societal tensions in contemporary city-life and consumerism, in which technology is becoming ever more personal and interpersonal.

Chang has exhibited his mixed media works in solo exhibitions at venues such as the Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair (2015), the Hong Kong Correspondent’s Club (2016), Harley-Davidson of Hong Kong (2017), KONG Art Space (2018) and Ethos (2019); with group exhibitions at The Stallery (2019-2020), Hong Kong Arts Collective (2019), Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (2019) and Detour at PMQ (2020) alongside prominent local and international artists. Most notably in September 2016, his exhibition of fine art photographs taken inside the original Blue House before its renovations began won wide acclaim. And in 2018, his series ‘Tear & Consume: An Art Experiment’ pioneered the first exhibition in Hong Kong where you can touch and destroy his paintings.
