Lantau is a double gateway to the rapidly growing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and to the world. With this strategic location, Lantau and its adjoining areas offer tremendous opportunities to meet the challenges of Hong Kong, such as high demand for housing land and quality living environment, traffic congestion between the New Territories and urban areas, inadequate social welfare facilities, particularly for the aging population, lack of solution space for urban renewal and keen global economic competition, etc.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced Lantau Tomorrow Vision in her 2018 Policy Address. It propels the following five policy directions in developing Lantau:

  • unleashing land potential, increasing land supply and developing a liveable near carbon-neutral city;
  • according priority to transport infrastructure, reinforcing advantages of a "Double Gateway";
  • developing the aerotropolis and the third Core Business District to promote economic development;
  • enhancing environmental capacity for sustainable development; and
  • increasing leisure and entertainment facilities to promote a healthy lifestyle.

While some consider Lantau Tomorrow a visionary plan guiding the sustainable growth of Hong Kong in the future 20-30 years, some others criticize it as a White Elephant. Let's share our thoughts in the upcoming seminar on how we shall implement the Lantau Tomorrow Vision in an environmentally friendly fashion.
