Making AI Useful: Practical Use Cases for Advanced AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been continuing to develop extremely rapidly, making it difficult for businesses to keep up with recent advances -- let alone leverage them to solve practical problems. To alleviate this situation, we will demystify some of the most important advances (e.g., RAG, knowledge graphs, reasoning models) before introducing how they are being used at some of the most forward-thinking corporations in Hong Kong.

We have invited individuals with experience implementing these technologies in business settings, including recent graduates of HKUST's MSc in Business Analytics (MSBA) program, who participated in corporate-academic partnerships to bring AI into the field, to share key insights.

Dr. Andrew Li is a radiologist-in-training at Queen Mary Hospital, with a keen interest in integrating AI into medical imaging. He has been actively involved in several medical imaging AI research and development initiatives at both the Hospital Authority and HKU, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency for various imaging modalities including radiographs, CT and MRI scans. Most recently, he has been co-leading the development and implementation of a Hospital Authority-wide deep learning algorithm to accelerate detection and treatment of pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening cardiopulmonary condition. As a board member of Brown University Alumni Association of Hong Kong, Andrew is excited to share insights from this project at this upcoming talk.

Taosha Wang is a Lead Portfolio Manager at Fidelity, where she manages a group of Thematic Macro strategies. These strategies aim to capture structural growth themes while navigating macroeconomic cycles. She invests globally across asset classes.

Taosha is also a published author and frequent public speaker. She is a columnist affiliated with Reuters Commentary, appears regularly as a featured guest on Bloomberg TV, and co-hosts Fidelity International’s podcast, The Investor’s Guide to Asia. Her debut book, Techonomics You Should Know: Life-Changing Economics of Disruptive Technologies, was a #1 bestseller in Microeconomics on Amazon.com.

Prior to joining Fidelity in 2021, Taosha worked at PIMCO as a Senior Vice President and was part of the working team to receive the prestigious Morningstar Fund Manager of the Year award. She was previously a management consultant at McKinsey, a research analyst at Goldman Sachs and an investment banker at Credit Suisse, now part of the UBS Group.

Taosha received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Brown University and an executive MBA degree from the Kellogg School of Management in the United States. She is a board member of the Brown University Alumni Association in Hong Kong.

Freeman Yuk Fei Chan is a dynamic fintech professional with specialized expertise in both AI-driven financial solutions and the Web3 ecosystem. He is currently developing practical AI applications as an AI Digitalization Intern at the DBS Data Chapter. This role builds upon his extensive background in the digital asset space, where he has provided strategic financial governance for one of Hong Kong’s first licensed crypto exchanges and advised a diverse portfolio of Web3 clients on DeFi protocols and token ecosystems at PwC. Freeman excels at navigating the intersection of technology and finance, from spearheading regulatory compliance for crypto operations to architecting the digitalization of financial reporting systems.

As a strategic advisor, Freeman has authored numerous thought leadership reports on the future of digital assets, which have been referenced by leading institutions like UBS and LVMH. His strategic counsel is backed by deep technical acumen, demonstrated through his development of blockchain transaction analysis frameworks and his proficiency in AI and Machine Learning. By combining a Master of Science in Business Analytics with hands-on skills in Python, Freeman is adept at driving innovation and delivering high-impact strategies across the modern financial technology landscape.

Ree is an incoming Associate at the data management advisory firm Sprint Milestone and a recent graduate of the MSc in Business Analytics program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He is originally from Indonesia, and he specializes in designing and implementing AI-driven business solutions, with a proven portfolio that includes developing intelligent chatbots and creating workflow automation systems to drive operational efficiency. This expertise was put into practice during his internship at Techtronic Industries (TTI), where he led a key AI project focused on enabling customer knowledge with AI. Ree excels at bridging the gap between advanced analytics and strategic business value, positioning him as a dynamic problem-solver for modern enterprise challenges.
