Competing in 3 Olympics, in a career that spanned over 20 years, first as a swimmer and later as a rower, Fenella is undoubtedly one of Hong Kong's most decorated and longest serving athletes. Fenella was the only HK athlete to have medaled in 2 sports at the Asian Games level, winning multiple medals in both sports, underlining her talent and versatility.
Career highlights include being the first HK athlete to qualify for the finals in the World Rowing Championship, where she competed in the single sculls, as well as winning HK's first ever Asian Swimming Championships Gold medals when she was crowned a double Asian Swimming Champion at age 15yrs in the 200m and 400m freestyle events. Her background in multi-sports dates back to the mid 1980's, claiming not only women’s champion but also the title of Overall Winner in the inaugural HK International Biathlon Championships, where she beat the entire men's field too.
Fenella grew up in HK, attending both local and ESF schools before venturing out for university studies in the UK, where she earned a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering and later a Masters in Finance, in addition to various sport coaching accreditations.
Fenella’s achievements in sport were further recognized by being awarded the prestigious HK Sport Star Award in 1997, 1998 and 1999. In recognition of her success and being a prominent figure in sport she was selected to be the flagbearer for Hong Kong, China delegation at the Opening Ceremony at the Sydney Olympic Games, proudly displaying the HKSAR flag for the first time at an Olympic Games. She was also selected to be a torchbearer during the Beijing Olympic Torch relay, where she was given the honour to carry the Olympic Torch across the iconic HK harbour.
Post retirement as a competitive athlete, Fenella continued to stay involved in both HK and International sports. She served as President of the HK Triathlon Association and the Board of the Asian Triathlon Federation. Currently she sits on the Board of the HK China Rowing Association. Over the years, Fenella has also been appointed to several on several government sporting committees. Internationally, Fenella is a part of World Triathlon’s coach development team, where she educate and support the next generation of coaches in developing countries. She is also founding member of the Hong Kong Olympians Association, spreading the values of Olympism to support past, present and future generations of sport talent.
