While there is no universal recipe for success, for Weijian Shan, it is perseverance, patience and preparation. Shan, a well-known financier in Asia, has an extraordinary life experience – enduring hardships working as a hard laborer for 6 years in the remote Gobi Desert during the Cultural Revolution and managing to learn English all by himself. After the Revolution had ended, he became one of the first Chinese students to study in the US. He holds an MBA and a PhD despite receiving only elementary education. Today, he owns a private equity & alternative asset management firm with more than $12 billion in capital under management across private equity, absolute return, and real estate investments.

In this book launch event, Shan will share an insider's recount of the Cultural Revolution and how the journey from the People's Republic of China to "People's Republic of Berkeley" has shaped his view on China and America. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sino-US diplomatic relations, it has never been timelier to contemplate the world's most important bilateral relationship through a different lens.
