Steve Vickers will outline practical issues arising from the current US China trade war.

Whilst the markets welcomed the apparent truce between Chinese Communist Party (CCP) general secretary Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump at a December 2018 meeting in Buenos Aires, this appears to be, sadly, very short lived.

The reality, is that this trade war is but a symptom of a much more significant divergence between the US and China. It is quite evident that no short-term diplomatic bonhomie can alter that systemic trend. Indeed within 24 hours of the meeting in Beunos Aires, the CFO of Huawei was arrested in Canada upon a US request for extradition.

This divergence between these superpowers will markedly reshape the commercial environment in the Asia-Pacific region. Companies will need to adapt to this new reality if they are to prosper or maintain market share.

Highlights of Steve's presentation will include:

  • An overview of the current Sino US tensions
  • A discussion as to whether we have moved from a trade war to the beginnings of a Cold War
  • An explanation of the new order
  • Recommendations as to how businesses should respond to the new situation
  • Predictions as to some winners and losers
