Sustainability 101 Online Workshop

AmCham's Transport & Logistics Committee and its sustainability working group is planning to introduce the "Sustainability 101" online workshop on Jan 25 (08:30 to 09:30 HKT). This event is an introduction to all AmCham members and corporates to set up a pathway to achieve their sustainability goals. Sustainability as a subset of ESG, is becoming very prominent in present-day corporate boardroom discussions and the AmCham Transport & Logistics Committee will invite experienced professionals to share a few case studies of how a corporate company could start early steps of setting up a sustainability strategy.

This event will be hosted by Chaminda Gunasekera, Steering Committee member of the Transport & Logistics Committee and lead for sustainability alongside three panel speakers from International Financial Corporation (IFC) and Global Integrated Solutions (GIS) who are experts of helping companies to set up ESG/Sustainability strategies.

Chaminda Gunasekera.FCILT is the Senior Director of SEKO Logistics Hong Kong looking after eCommerce, Air Product and Network and also covering the company’s Sustainability efforts in APAC. Chaminda is Sri Lankan living in Hong Kong and has been in the region for over 13 years and also lived in Dubai for 5 years. Chaminda has held many senior roles in his career and volunteered for social work. Some of few important roles he has held in Asia and Middle East were, VP of Sales , Marketing & Key accounts in Agility Greater China, Group Director-Commercial for Able Logistics Group in the Middle East (Acquired by Kerry Logistics), the first Director of International Business for Kerry Logistics in Greater China, CEO of Bax Global Sub Continent and East Africa to name a few. Chaminda is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and services and served as the Chairman of UAE board of directors for CILT based in Dubai. Chaminda is a very passionate sustainability activist looking after many projects for CO2 savings and designing logistics solutions for carbon neutralizing eCommerce products. Chaminda is very active in Social media and could be found with his profile in LinkedIn.

Mr. Chenard is the Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Strategy for Global Integrated Services (GIS) leading sustainability strategy development for clients.

Before joining GIS, Mr. Chenard was the Vice President of Sustainability for RCS Logistics. In that role, he developed and executed the company’s sustainability strategy including assessing baselines, developing goals & objectives, and driving the plan to improve the sustainability footprint.

Prior to RCS Logistics, Mr. Chenard was the director of sustainability for Lowe’s. In that role, he worked internally with operators, buyers, logistics and marketing, and externally with suppliers and environmental organizations to focus on the environmental aspects of Lowe’s business. He oversaw several accomplishments including awards from ENERGY STAR and EPA SmartWay Transport Partners, implementation of rechargeable battery collection in all stores, and Lowe’s industry leading wood procurement policy.

Mr. Chenard also worked at Pitney Bowes and Champion International – both in Stamford, Connecticut. At both companies he developed and implemented environmental management systems for the companies’ manufacturing operations.

Mr. Chenard began his professional career in the United States Navy serving for seven years aboard ships in Charleston, SC and the Middle East as well as onboard hovercraft in Norfolk.

Mr. Chenard earned his environmental management graduate degree from Duke University and has an MA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Elena Craft is Senior Director of Climate and Health at Environmental Defense Fund, one of the world’s leading environmental organizations. She also works with the consulting firm Global Integrated Services as Senior Vice President of Sustainability.

Based in Texas, Dr. Craft plays a central role in bringing together multiple public and private sector partners on successful initiatives to address climate and air pollution within transportation, as related to both the technical and sector-specific emission standards as well as through logistical improvements in supply chain efficiencies.

In partnership with the Coalition for Responsible Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), she assisted in the expansion of EPA’s flagship SmartWay program to include drayage trucks from ports. Most recently, she helped to facilitate millions of dollars worth of clean air funds for demonstration projects related to electrification of heavy duty electric vehicles at some of the nation’s largest ports.

Dr. Craft has testified extensively in local, state, and national forums, including testifying three times at the U.S. Congressional House hearings on national air pollution policy.

In addition, Dr. Craft serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center and Texas A&M University, and as a Kinder fellow at Rice University. Through those affiliations, she has pushed forward research efforts to protect public health, including a leading role in the establishment of the Texas Flood Registry – the first registry after catastrophic flooding – to understand the impact of Hurricane Harvey’s toll on people’s physical and mental health.

Dr. Craft holds a B.S. degree in biology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, a M.S. degree in toxicology from North Carolina State University, and a Ph.D. from Duke University.
