Hong Kong's role as a global transportation and logistics hub is dependent upon the success of its ocean port, as more than 80% of the world's cargo travels by sea. The steady decline of ocean cargo volume over the past several years has prompted the creation of a new and innovative business model, designed to turn the tide of business decline and increase Hong Kong's competitiveness in the region. The new Hong Kong Seaport Alliance, which began joint operations in April, is the first step toward the development of a 21st century Smart Port in Hong Kong.

Peter J. Levesque, Group Managing Director of Modern Terminals Limited and Past AmCham Chairman will provide a comprehensive overview of the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance, highlighting the cost efficiencies and service improvements that will be generated as a result of the Alliance's centralized operating model. He will also address the Seaport Alliance's new value proposition for global carriers which is designed to incentivize ocean carrier volumes back to the SAR.

Gerry Yim, Managing Director, Hongkong International Terminals Limited will join Mr Levesque for the Q&A session after presentation.

Peter Levesque has over 25 years of international transportation and logistics experience and has been working in the Asia Pacific Region since 1996. He is currently the Group Managing Director of Modern Terminals Limited based in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining Modern Terminals as Chief Commercial Officer in 2010 and as Chief Operating Officer since 2015 responsible for terminal operations, IT technology development, sales and marketing, Mr. Levesque served as Senior Vice President and Global Head of the CEVA Logistics Supply Chain Group. He also served as Regional Vice President for DHL International Supply Chain Asia Pacific. In 2000 he co-founded V-Logic Limited, a niche third-party logistics company based in Hong Kong. Prior to V-Logic he held several management positions with American President Lines, including Managing Director of APL Logistics (ACS) for North Asia.

Mr. Levesque holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, and an MBA from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has served as Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship for the Kellogg/HKUST EMBA program, and for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s MBA program.

Mr. Levesque served in 2014 and 2015 as Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong representing over 800 companies across 40 different nationalities. In addition to his time at AmCham he has served on the Executive Committee and Board of Governors for The American Club in Hong Kong, and served as President of The American Club in 2013. Mr. Levesque currently sits on the Shipping & Transport Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Hong Kong – United States Business Council.

Mr. Levesque is the author of The Shipping Point, The Rise of China and the Future of Retail Supply Chain Management, which was published by Wiley & Sons in 2011. He is a guest speaker at conventions and industry forums around the world.

Mr Gerry Yim is the Managing Director of HIT and is also the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of the HPH Trust, the world’s first container port business trust listed in Singapore. Mr Yim was the Managing Director of the Africa, Middle East and Americas division of Hutchison Ports and was employed by the Hutchison Ports Group from 2003 to 2009 in various senior positions before joining Hysan Development Company Limited, a company listed on the Main Board of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, in December 2009 as its Executive Director and subsequently in March 2010 as its CEO. He has also held senior positions in general management, finance, and investment banking at major organisations in Hong Kong.

He is the Chairman of the Shipping & Port Operations Group of the Employers’ Federation of Hong Kong and a member of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
