Overview

Hong Kong has been through many storms, but there are those who feel it is facing the most severe turbulence yet. As we look to the next 25 years of Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, it is imperative to renew optimism and business confidence, and to discover fresh opportunities to start a new chapter for this international city.

For the past 25 years, Hong Kong has been a prosperous, dynamic, and entrepreneurial global city and regional hub. Hong Kong's competitive edge lies in its core values of rule of law, connectivity, the ease of doing business, free enterprise and free flow of people and information and goods and finance. Given this unique advantage, coming through many difficulties, Hong Kong has remained an important gateway to China, and a springboard for businesses to tap into the regional and global market.

Hong Kong is in transition and will continue to change. Many people have questioned the future of the city as a result of the 2019 protests and its aftermath and the stringent pandemic measures. Through regular dialogues with members, AmCham has found a general pessimism in the business community regarding fraught US-China relations, data freedom, regulatory environment, the rule of law, and high costs of living, in addition to frustration with the way COVID was handled by Hong Kong. The AmCham HK's 2022 Business Sentiment Survey reflected this pessimism.

As we look ahead, while there are doubts and we are realistic about the challenges, opportunities remain for Hong Kong. How does Hong Kong navigate through the new global environment? What about developing the next generation of leaders? What is the future status of Hong Kong as an international financial center? Will the spirit of entrepreneurialism flourish post-COVID? International businesses have contributed to the city's economic development for decades; what role will the international business community play in the next 25 years? What can we anticipate as Hong Kong grows into a smart, sustainable society? How will Hong Kong incorporate arts and culture into its business core competence to make it a truly sophisticated global metropolis? What regional role can Hong Kong play?
