For 2012, the annual passenger traffic reached 56.5 million and flight movements at 352,000, representing 4.7% and 5.3% year-on-year increase respectively. Air cargo throughput reached 4.02 million tonnes, making HKIA the world's busiest cargo airport for the third year in a row.
To enhance the handling capacity, the Airport Authority (AAHK) has embarked upon short to long-term projects for expansion of the existing infrastructure and facilities at HKIA. Mr John Chai, Executive Director, Projects, will share with members the major ongoing development and plans, including the third runway project, of which HKSAR Government has given its in-principle approval in March 2012 for AAHK to proceed with the next stage of planning work.
